This collection of essays by both established and emerging scholars offers fresh perspectives on Dutch art, addressing subjects that range from sketches and sketchbooks to design and study drawings, collectors and the drawings market, material and technical practices, and new research on artists whose oeuvres merit greater attention. Together, these contributions deepen our understanding of early modern Netherlandish, Dutch and Flemish drawings while challenging long-standing assumptions about how they were made, used, valued and preserved. Richly illustrated and intellectually engaging, Drawn Together reflects a dynamic and evolving field, demonstrating how interdisciplinary approaches continue to reinvigorate the study of works on paper for a new generation of scholars and readers. The volume emerges from the Peck Drawings Symposium held at the Rijksmuseum in 2023, convened in conjunction with the exhibition Drawn to Life: Master Drawings from the Age of Rembrandt in the Peck Collection. The exhibition was presented at the Ackland Art Museum and the Rembrandt House Museum in 2022–23, providing a timely forum for the exchange of new research on early modern Netherlandish, Dutch and Flemish drawings.
