In 1980, poet Eugène Guillevie wrote: "I usually say that translating poems is not difficult, that it is merely impossible, yet humanity has never managed to do anything but the impossible (...) and has failed to do the possible." Poets who have translated other poets have resoundingly denied the popular opinion which claims that poetry is untranslatable, particularly throughout the 20 th century. In this book, Christine Lombez explores some outstanding examples of eminent poet translators: Albert-Birot, Beckett, Bonnefoy, Guerne, Guillevie, Jaccottet, Rilke, Pasternak, H. Thomas, Marina Tsvetaeva, as well some personalities who deserve to be rediscovered, such as Jean Prévost and Armand Robin.
